PITTSBURGH, PA — The votes now are being counted in Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District race between Democratic U.S. Rep. and her Republican challenger, Shadyside businessman James Hayes.
As of 10:10 p.m., Lee had 157,917 votes to Hayes'65,274.
Lee is attempting to see if history will repeat itself. Two years ago, she handily defeated Hayes by a 234,802-181,426 vote tally.
Lee, 38, a former state representative from Swissvale, is seeking her third term in office.
Hayes, 65, holds a bachelor's degree in international economics from Georgetown University, a master's degree in economics and policy from Princeton University, an MBA in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago, and a doctorate in business administration from Case Western Reserve.
The pair are battling for the congressional seat representing Pittsburgh, some of its eastern suburbs, the Mon Valley and a slice of Westmoreland County.
Lee had a substantial fundraising edge over her opponent. She had $1.4 million in total receipts for the 2025-26 election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission Data. Hayes raised $40,138 during the election cycle.
