PITTSBURGH, PA — Chik-fil-A has confirmed a data breach two months after the fast food chain began investigating reports of fraudulent activity on its mobile app. Several customers had complained that hackers had accessed their data - including bank account information.

The company said in a statement that less than two percent of its app users had their personal information compromised.

“We never want our customers to experience something like this and have communicated directly with those impacted to resolve these issues, while taking necessary efforts to protect our system and our customers for the future,” the company’s statement said. “We are grateful for our customers’ patience while we worked to resolve this issue and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

It's not uncommon for hackers to target fast food restaurants. In January, Yum! Brands, which operates KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell suffered a ransomeware attack that prompted the temporary closure of 300 locations in England. Yum! stated at the time that no customer information was stolen.

In 2021, McDonald's reported a data breach impacting locations in the United States, South Korea and Taiwan. The chain said that while certain restaurant information was stolen, no "sensitive or personal" customer or employee data was taken.
