PHILADELPHIA, PA — Republican United States Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz has received a prominent endorsement from the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5. The move came despite the fact that the city's unions traditionally back Democratic candidates.

"On behalf of President John McNesby and the FOP executive board, we are proud to endorse Dr. Mehmet Oz for U.S. Senate," stated a post on the union's Twitter feed."We believe he will protect our police officers and serve justice in our community. We look forward to working with him in the future."

Oz is running against Democrat and Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, who also chairs the state's Board of Pardons. Since his leadership, the number of prison inmates recommended for clemency and release has dramatically increased.

Oz has used Fetterman's leniency policies toward convicted criminals as a campaign staple.

Oz and Fetterman are both seeking to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey. The election occurs on Nov. 8.
