Former Olympian Mary Lou Retton Arrested Near PA Border

Former Olympics star Mary Lou Retton is facing legal difficulties for an incident that occurred near the Pennsylvania border.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton was arrested on a driving under the influence charge about 90 miles south of Pittsburgh in Fairmont, West Virginia.

Retton, 57, was arrested on May 17, according to court records. She was released on a $1,500 personal recognizance bond.

A Fairmont native, Retton is described on the Olympics website as "a true American sporting icon" who won five medals at the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles. Recording perfect 10s on the floor and vault, she became the first American in history to win an Olympic individual all-round gold. She also won silver in the vault, bronze in the uneven bars and the floor, and another silver in the team event.

Sports Illustrated named her Sportsperson of the Year in 1984 for her accomplishments at the Summer Games.

Retton was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997. She also has worked as a television personality and a motivational speaker.

She also appeared in movies and TV shows, including "Baywatch" and the 1994 film "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult."

During George W. Bush's presidency, she served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness.

Retton gained relatively recent noteriety in 2023 when her daughters announced she was battling a rare form of pneumonia and was fighting for her life in a hospital intensive care unit.
