Former Steelers Star James Harrison Retires

Harrison finished his impressive career with the New England Patriots.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison announced his retirement Monday, little more than two months after playing his final game in the Super Bowl as a member of the New England Patriots.

“I've missed way too much for way too long...and I'm done,” Harrison, 39, stated in an Instagram post. “Many thanks to my family, coaches, the fans, and everyone who played a role in my football life.”

From undrafted free agent to NFL defensive player of the year, Harrison put up impressive statistics in a 15-year-career spent primarily in two stints with the Steelers. In addition to playing for the Patriots after his release by the Steelers last fall, he also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.

A five-time pro bowl selection, Harrison won two Super Bowls with the Steelers, XL and XLIII. In Super Bowl XLIII, he intercepted a pass from Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner at the goal line and ran back the length of the field for a 100-yard touchdown at the end of the first half. At the time, it was the longest play in Super Bowl history.

According to NFL Update, Harrison finished his career with 573 tackles, 84.5 sacks. 34 forced fumbles and eight interceptions. He twice was named a first-team All-Pro.
