Kennywood Railroad To Become Thomas The Train Attraction

The quaint railroad area will have a vastly different look when Kennywood's 2018 season begins.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Kennywood’s venerable train ride is being repurposed for the West Mifflin amusement park’s coming season and will be turned into Thomas Town, an area featuring the children’s railroad character Thomas the Tank Engine.

Kennywood officials say it’s one of the largest single-year additions in the park’s 120-year history. Being incorporated into the footprint of the Olde Kennywood Railroad, which has operated since 1945, will be five rides including a train ride with Thomas, a stage show along with themed play and entertainment areas and a retail center.

It will be the second largest permanent Thomas & Friends attraction in North America, according to Kennywood officials.

“We’re so excited to welcome Thomas & Friends to Kennywood,” Kennywood General Manager Jerome Gibas said in a release. “Thomas Town presents a huge addition that expands our family offerings while introducing the park to Thomas and Friends fans from around the globe. We couldn’t ask for a better gift for Kennywood and our guests to help celebrate our 120th anniversary season in 2018.”

Thomas the Tank Engine was created over 70 years ago by a British clergyman, the Rev W Awdry, as a storybook for his son. That story grew into an award-winning global brand franchise, spawning more than 400 original TV episodes, 12 feature-length films and 14 websites in nine countries. It's the second biggest preschool toy seller in the United States.
