PITTSBURGH, PA — The enormous Oakland Crossings project is one step closer to reality after the city planning commission approved it on Tuesday. The proposal now goes to city council, which has pledged to hold hearings on the development, recently scaled back from 17 acres to 13 acres.

Oakland Crossings now will include multiple apartment buildings on Halket Street and redeveloping the former Quality Inn and Isaly properties on the Boulevard of the Allies. Now removed from the project are redevelopment along McKee Place, Louisa Street and Zulema Park.

Walnut Capital, which developed Bakery Square in the East End, is spearheading the project.

In addition to hundreds of new apartment units, Walnut Capital is promising an elevated pedestrian bridge over the Boulevard, a new full-service grocery store and public spaces that increase community green space. Giant Eagle is a leading contender to build a grocery in the Quality Inn space, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently reported.
