New Pittsburgh Airport Terminal Design Details Emerge

The concept design for the new $1.1 billion building has been completed.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Additional details are emerging regarding Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal now under design, including new renderings of what the $1.1 billion building will look like.

The new terminal will replace the existing landside terminal and will be connected to the airside terminal. It will house check-in, security and baggage claim areas.

According to Blue Sky, the airport’s online news site, the new terminal is expected to feature:

Separate levels for departing and arriving passengers and a non-public level for building systems, such as baggage belts.

  • An expanded TSA checkpoint.
  • Shorter walking distances for arriving and departing domestic and international passengers.
  • Indoor and outdoor green plazas and gathering spaces.
  • Additional space for concessions, artwork and other amenities.
  • Planning for technological improvements and more automated systems.

Further details were expected to be disclosed Wednesday during the annual “State of the Airport” reception at a Downtown hotel. But airport executive director Christina Cassotis told Blue Sky that the new terminal, which will be require no public money, is desperately needed.

“It doesn’t make sense to maintain a facility that was built to be a hub airport when there is no hub here,” she said. “We are now an origin-and-destination market, and we have a bright future. This (project) is about planning for that future and taking a cue from our past – not being bound by it.”
