PENNSYLVANIA — In the end, former President Donald Trump's endorsement didn't help Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano's gubernatorial bid. Democratic Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro soundly defeated him in Tuesday's election for governor.

Shapiro is the projected winner of the gubernatorial race in Pennsylvania, NBC News and other outlets projected, late Tuesday. According to The New York Times, Shapiro had 2,008,064 votes to Mastriano's 1,571,560.

All votes tallies are unofficial until being verified by individual county elections departments.

Mastriano had no immediate concession announcement late Tuesday.

The election result was not unanticipated. Shapiro had a substantial fundraising edge and held decisive edges in nearly every poll over the far-right Mastriano. The Franklin County senator trumpeted an anti-abortion stance, termed the concept of global warming "fake science," and hinted at decertifying every election machine in the state if elected.

Before announcing his candidacy, Mastriano perhaps was best known for being among the elected officials who attended the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Mastriano drew headlines last week with news that the Canadian university that granted him a doctorate in history is probing a new complaint against him alleging numerous instances of academic fraud in his dissertation.
