Penguins-Capitals Playoffs: 2 Pens Stars Out For Game 1

The team opens the second-round playoff series on the road against the Capitals Thursday.

PITTSBURGH, PA - When the Penguins play the Washington Capitals in the opening game of their second-round playoff series Thursday, they will be without two key players: Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin.

Coach Mike Sullivan announced Wednesday that the two forwards will not be available for the series’ first game, NBC Sports reported. Malkin could be available for the second game of the series, but Hagelin won’t make the trip to Washington and the earliest he might play would be Game 3.

Malkin was injured in Game 5 of the opening round series against the Philadelphia Flyers and did not play in the series-clinching Game 6. Hagelin was hurt in Game 6 after being hit by forward Claude Giroux.
