Penguins Have One Of NHL's Most Dedicated Fan Bases: Study

PITTSBURGH, PA — As the Penguins prepare to open the 2022-23 season on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, a new study rates the team's fan base as the NHL's second-most dedicated.

PennStakes.com, an online gaming site, ranked 31 of the 32 teams based on fan loyalty. The Seattle Kraken, which has only been in existence for one year, was not included in the rankings. Penguins fans finished behind only the Chicago Blackhawks in terms of their dedication.

Here is the methodology that was used:

Game Day Commitment was a weighted grouping of capacity percentage by wins since the 2010 season (2019 & 2020 were not included due to the pandemic), and the amount of ticket searches in the state of that team. Pennstakes utilized NHL.com for attendance numbers and Google Trends to
find the amount of ticket searches.

Also analyzed was fan engagement, a weighted grouping of social following growth over the
past five years and the engagement rates of all of the NHL’s team social media accounts. Pennstakes utilized SocialBlade.com to find the statistics for the category, which analyzed the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok & YouTube accounts of each team.

Here are the NHL's top 10 most dedicated fan bases, according to the study:

1. Chicago Blackhawks

2. Pittsburgh Penguins

3. Toronto Maple Leafts

4.Montreal Canadiens

5. Boston Bruins

6. Detroit Red Wings

7. Washington Capitals

8. (tie) Philadelphia Flyers

8. (tie) Minnesota Wild

10. New York Rangers

As the Pens open the season, PennStakes list them tied with the Rangers as 10th-place favorites to win the Stanley Cup.
