Pirates Introduce New Manager Derek Shelton
The 41st manager in Pirates' history met with the media Wednesday at PNC Park.

PITTSBURGH, PA - A week after the official announcement was made, Derek Shelton was introduced as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday. He succeeds Clint Hurdle, who was fired before the season's final game in September.
Shelton appeared at PNC Park with new general manager Ben Cherington and put on a new Pirates Nike jersey with the number 17 on it. Talking about building a new culture for the Pirates, Shelton said, "It's going to be one that's built on relationships and built on communication. And we're going to build a coaching staff that has that at the forefront of their minds."
Shetlon, the Minnesota Twins bench coach before landing the Pirates job, has his work cut out for him. The Pirates 69-93 record in 2019, good for a last-place finish in the National League Central. There were fight between players, animosity between players and coaches and closer Felipe Vasquez was arrested on child sex abuse charges.

The Pirates open the 2020 season in Tampa on March 26 against the Rays, whom Shelton coached for from 2010 through 2016.
