Pittsburgh Bans Single-Use Plastic Bags

PITTSBURGH, PA — Following Philadelphia's lead, Pittsburgh has banned the use of most single-use plastic bags in the city. City council approved the move Tuesday; it will be effective in April 2023.

The legislation will require shoppers to bring their own reusable bags to stores or pay 10 cents each for a paper bag.

Garbage and pet waste bags are exempt, as are produce bags, meat packaging, pharmacy and floral wrapping bags.

Philadelphia in October began prohibiting single-use plastic bags and non-recycled content paper bags begins. The city formally began enforcing the ban on April 1.
