Pittsburgh School Officials Jet To Costa Rica, Ireland
The district spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on travel expenses last year, a KDKA-TV report found.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Pittsburgh Public Schools spent more than $300,000 last year on travel expenses for Superintendent Anthony Hamlet, district administrators and school board members, according to KDKA-TV.
.
The station also found that the district’s international travel expenses included more more than $20,000 in 2016 to send 15 district staffers to Costa Rica and $11,000 last year to send six employees to Ireland. Hamlet has traveled to places such as Miami, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
Hamlet defended the travel, telling KDKA it was for professional development conferences and workshops to advance professional expertise. But school director Terry Kennedy believes the travel costs should be reined in and that taxpayers are paying Hamlet to manage the district, not to go on numerous trips.
Hamlet, a former NFL player with the Indianapolis Colts, has been superintendent since July 2016.
