Toys R Us Poised To Make A Comeback

Plans are afoot to revive the toy store chain, which closed more than 700 stores this year.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The defunct Toys R Us chain soon could come back to life, but it’s unclear how many of the retailer’s southwestern Pennsylvania locations - if any - might reopen.

A bankruptcy scheduled auction of the Toys R Us brand name and other intellectual property assets, including Geoffrey the Giraffe, was canceled by the chain’s top lenders. Instead, a reorganization plan would permit a new Toys R Us and Babies R Us company to use those assets to relaunch, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It’s unclear when that relaunch might occur.

Toys R Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2017 in an attempt to restructure about $5 billion in debt. The company changed course earlier this year, saying it would shut down its stores in the United States. More than 700 stores were closed, and tens of thousands of jobs were eliminated.
