Uniontown Tornado Confirmed By National Weather Service

The storm caused widespread damage to the Fayette County town.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The storm that caused significant destruction in Uniontown Thursday night was a small tornado, the National Weather Service confirmed Friday. It was the first confirmed February tornado in southwestern Pennsylvania since 1950.

The weather service said it was an EF1 tornado. EF1 tornadoes have wind speeds between 86 and 110 mph, cause moderate damage and are capable of causing surface damage to roofs, pushing mobile homes off of foundations and pushing moving vehicles off the road.

The tornado caused no fatalities or significant injuries.Cleanup efforts were continuing in the Uniontown area on Thursday, especially around Gallatin avenue where damage was extensive.
