Video Of McKeesport Police Officer Shooting Released

PITTSBURGH, PA — Allegheny County Police have released a surveillance camera video of a McKeesport police officer being shot and seriously wounded on Sunday. The video released as the manhunt for the suspected shooter, Kobe Lee Francis, 22, of McKeesport.

Francis, who had been arrested for violating a protection from abuse order, shot officer Gerasimos Athans, 32, as he was getting out of the police vehicle at the station. Athans was shot three times, but his injuries are not life-threatening and the four-year veteran of the force is expected to be released from the hospital in the next several days.

Police say Francis will be charged with criminal attempted homicide, escape, flight to avoid apprehension, aggravated assault and violating the Uniform Firearms Act.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information concerning the shooting and Francis' whereabouts is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). The department also can be reached via its social media sites. Those contacting police can remain anonymous.
