Obituary - Blanche M. Asherman

Blanche was born in North Bessemer, PA to Frank and Mary (Strehar) Boznar  She was the wife of the late John (Jack) Asherman for 65 years; loving mother of sons John Jr (Charlotte) of Coatesville, PA and Dana (Kirsten Aguirre) of Baden; sister of the late Almeda  Fedock and Henry Boznar.  She is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Upon graduation from Oakmont High School in 1945, Blanche attended radio operator school for American Airlines, stationed in NY and Chicago where she met her husband.  She retired in 1987 after 25 years of service from U.S. Gypsum Co in Oakmont.

Blanche was an avid dog lover and enjoyed the outdoors.  She hiked, skied and travelled throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada, and much of the United States.  As a member of the Pittsburgh AYH (American Youth Hostels) Blanche was active in the maintenance of the Rachel Carson and Baker Trails and hiked the backcountry in the Sawtooth mountains of Idaho.  She bicycled The Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal to Washington D.C., and celebrated her 50th wedding Anniversary with a two month camping trip to Alaska.

Blanche and her husband frequently traveled to Slovenia, the birthplace of her parents.

One of her proudest moments was in 1999 when she hiked to the top of Mount Triglav, the highest point in Slovenia with a group of 100 women.  At that time she was the oldest woman to do so.

Blanche served on the Board  and was a long-time member of SNPJ Heritage Center in Enon Valley, PA which is dedicated to maintaining and promoting Slovenian Culture in the U.S.

Relatives and friends will be invited to a celebration of Blanche's life to be announced at a later date.  Private Interment will be at Plum Creek Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Animal Protectors of the Allegheny Valley, 533 Linden Avenue., New Kensington, PA, 15068.
