
Adelbert ‘Del” C. Wygant, of Oakmont, PA, passed away on October 21, 2014, at the age of 91.
Del was born on July 9, 1923, son of Edgar C. Wygant and Florence Belle (Acklin) Wygant in Oil City, PA. He moved to St. Mary’s, PA when he was twelve and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1941. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He returned from the war and settled in Oakmont, PA, where he was employed by the US Postal Service.
Del married Dorothy J. Klingensmith on January 20, 1950. They moved to Plum Boro in 1954 where they resided until moving back to Oakmont in 2002. Del was a member of the Oakmont Presbyterian Church where he was the superintendent of Sunday School for many years and was an Elder of the Church. After retiring from the Post Office he worked for Lorch Floral Shop and Bloomers Floral Studio delivering flowers. He and Dorothy went on many trips around the USA visiting relatives and attending his annual army unit reunions driving in a cargo van they had fitted out as a camper. They spent many nights in KOA Campgrounds. When in town Del delivered meals on wheels and drove the Oak-a-Bus. Since he loved tinkering with anything electronic he was a ham radio operator and a member of the North Hills Amateur Radio Club. He was also a certified first responder and a member of R.E.A.C.T. When not reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching the Steelers and the Pirates games on TV, emailing and Skyping on his computer, he would be down at the RCAC playing pinochle.
Del was preceded in death by his parents, a sister June Alexander, a brother Alan Wygant and a half-brother Richard Wygant. He is survived by his wife Dorothy “Dot” and three children: Gloria L. Wendt, Menasha, WI, Beth (Robert) Guers, Roanoke, VA, and Bruce (Kathy) Wygant, Winchester, KY.; four grandchildren: Christopher (Kelly) Wygant, San Antonio, TX, Melissa J. Wygant, Oklahoma City, OK, Amanda Guers, New Cumberland, PA, and Robert Guers, JR, Fairfax, VA and one great-grandchild, Jackson Wygant; sister Barbara Sullivan, San Diego, CA, one half-brother Michael (Melinda) Wygant, El Cajon, CA and one half-sister Carol McKinney, Fort Collins, CO. He is also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces and also by many friends as he was very gregarious and would talk to everyone.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11 am in the Oakmont Presbyterian Church.
