
Charles J. Stein, Sr., of Longwood at Oakmont and formerly of Elizabeth Township, Ellwood City, and Butler, PA passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at the age of 90.
Charles was born on November 19, 1924 to the late John and Mary Edna McGuire Stein in Butler, PA. He leaves behind a loving wife, Julia Zachar Stein, and five children; John C. and Mary Kay Stein of Oakmont, Cynthia and Raymond Houck of Oakmont, Marguerite and David Schmidt of Chapel Hill, NC, Charles J. Stein Jr. and Elizabeth Stein of Chester Springs, PA, and Michael X. and Leisa Stein of West Chester, PA and 14 grandchildren; Michael, Genevieve, Abby, Hunter, Jake, Chad, Preston, Cooper, Sophie, Ellie, Hailey, Will, Owen, Mason; and one great-grand child, Sophia.
Charlie graduated from Butler HS in 1942 and joined the Navy during WWII, fighting in the Pacific for two years. After his discharge, he began his college studies in Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in June, 1949. He married the love of his life, Julia Zachar, on June 11, 1949. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in June, 2014. Charlie worked for US Steel from 1951-1983, serving as Superintendent of the Seamless Mill in Ellwood City until 1979 followed by a Superintendent position at US Steel National Works in McKeesport, PA, until his retirement in 1983. Charlie continued working as a consultant for another 20 years, first with several foundries and most significantly with Damascas Steel Plant in Beaver, PA.
Charlie enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and daily crossword puzzles. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Elizabeth, PA.
Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 6, 2014, 10 a.m., St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 101 McLay Drive, Elizabeth, PA 15037.
