Plum, Riverview School Districts Respond to Newtown School Shooting

Plum and Riverview school districts have addressed school safety and resources to deal with tragic school violence after Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT.

Counselors and teachers are available to students in Plum and Riverview who might have questions about the Newtown incident that left 20 first-graders and six of their teachers dead.

"It is unfortunate that school violence once again makes headlines around the nation," a statement posted on the Plum School District website read. "This unexplainable and senseless act of violence tears at the fabric of all school communities.

"It is inevitable that we focus on our own school safety and our children’s emotional well-being during this troubling time. It is our hope, that parents discuss any safety concern or child’s emotional fragility with our teachers, counselors or principal."

Similarly at Riverview, district administrators will be meeting with staff to review current emergency plans—including security cameras, and swipe card and buzzer systems.

"Please talk with your children to reassure them that teachers, counselors, and administrators work hard to be sure that everyone is safe and that if they ever have a concern or worry, they should contact their teacher, counselor, or principal," a statement posted on the Riverview School District's website read. "Parents are encouraged to communicate with their child's teacher or counselor, if they need extra assistance with helping to reassure a child that he or she is safe."
