Here's a roundup of items discussed by the Riverview School Board in April.

AP Tests

Riverview School officials are considering having the district take care of the cost of Advance Placement exams for students.

Principal Jay Moser said at the board's study session earlier this month that students who take AP English must take AP Social Studies—those students then have to take the AP test administered by the College Board. The cost of each test is $87.

Many students take two or more tests, Moser said, so if the district were to pay for each test, it would cost about $10,000. Students who score high enough receive 3 college credits per test.

"It's been a hardship for some families," Moser said. "I propose we cover the cost since we require the kids to take the test when they enroll in the class."

Moser said the district has been r two years in a row for its success in enrolling more students in AP classes, as well as having students score high on them.

Some school districts in the area pay for their students' tests, some pay for half the cost of the tests and some don't pay anything, Moser said. He asked the board to consider the proposal.

Lunch Prices to Increase

Lunch prices in the district will increase by 25-cents.

Officials voted to increase the lunch prices to $2.50 for the 2012-13 school year. Officials are preparing for new federal department of agriculture guidelines that will require districts to serve more whole grains; fruits and vegetables; and fat-free or low-fat milk—foods that are more expensive.

The new guidelines will be explain in depth at the May 7 student life meeting at 7 p.m. at the on Tenth Street.

School Physicians

The board hired Renaissance Family Practice UPMC as the district's school physician for $12,730 for the 2012-13 school year. The physicians perform physicals for student athletes.

Athletic Trainers

A three-year athletic trainer services contract with UPMC was approved. The costs would be $27,500 for 2012-13; $28,000 for 2013-14; and $28,500 for 2014-15. The trainers attend practices and home games and tend to injured athletes.
