School Officials Consider Adlai Stevenson Addition
The Plum School Board is exploring options dealing with elementary school renovations—including building an addition to one school and possibly closing another.
With the new ready to open next month, Plum School District officials have their sights on renovating the remaining elementary schools.
Officials have determined that , which is adjacent to in the Holiday Park neighborhood of Plum, most likely would be the first on the list. However, rather than just renovating the school, officials are considering building an addition.
On Tuesday, the school board unanimously voted to authorize Pennsylvania Soil and Rock of Monroeville to conduct a core sample study at Adlai Stevenson at a cost not to exceed $4,000.
Board member Shane McMasters, facility committee chair, said the matter had been discussed at length at the board's July 17 facilities committee meeting.
McMasters said district engineers had determined that the school must be "completely gutted." The existing building would need a new roof, windows, classroom doors, plumbing, HVAC system and more. The project was estimated to cost $4 million to $5 million.
One option discussed was building a 35,000 square-foot addition to the school. Should that happen, officials would consider closing another elementary school and consolidating.
The possibility of building an addition will be determined by the core samples taken at the site of the school.
McMasters said officials should receive those results over the next few weeks. The discussion will continue at the Aug. 21 facilities committee meeting, which will be held at the Plum High School board room at 6 p.m.
