Verona Update – 06.24.13

Wednesday, June 26 Donna Occhipinti, guitarist, will entertain during the fifth Concert in the Park from 7 to 8 pm in VeronaRailroad Park.  Be sure to remember your lawn chair or blanket so you can slide back and enjoy the music.  Snacks are also allowed in the Park.  You may bring your own or have some that are available.

 

Friday, June 28 all are invited to Cribbs Field, located between Second Avenue and Athletic Street along South Avenue, when Verona Chamber of Commerce presents, DRAGONS, RIDERS OF THE BERKThe curtain will rise at dusk.  A blanket to lounge on or a chair to sit in is something to bring so you will be comfortable.  Popcorn and Huggies will be available for your munching pleasure.

Sunday, June 30 is the last time you will be able to wish Pastor Don Blinn well before he moves on to his next challenging assignment.  The day will begin at 11 am with an inspiring time of worship packed with special music offered by Benjamin Blinn, Rick Donahoo, and George “Jacko” Rice.  Pastor Don will offer his departing message as pastor serving Verona, Rosedale United Methodist churches and the larger community.  A luncheon will follow at 1 pm in Fellowship Hall and then the sharing of stories relating to the last 12 years of the Blinn family ministry in Verona.

Saturday, July 6 an Artists’ Reception will be held between 6 and 9 pm in the Boulevard Gallery, located at 736 Allegheny River Blvd.   Featured exhibitors will be Pat Nigro (watercolor) and Ilona Ralston (hand painted glass) with Jewelry by Diane Wright.  Everyone is invited to come and visit with the artists and perhaps buy an art piece or two.  Refreshments will be served.  These artists will be featured from July 6 through July 27.  Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday from 12 to 4 pm. or for a special appointment call 412-828-1031.

 

Sunday, July 7 from 10 am to 4 pm the Creative Marketplace will set up in Verona Railroad Park. There will be artist vendors of pottery, jewelry designers, homemade soaps, lotions, knitted items, metal works, cookies, jams, and jellies, wood crafters, flower arrangements, glass works, food and music.  Sounds like a mini arts festival right here in Verona.

 

Wednesday, July 10 is the oldest (101 continuous years) community picnic held at Kennywood Park…the Verona/Oakmont Kennywood Picnic.  You can take your picnic basket and eat on the tables under the shelters or meet in the restaurant and enjoy the food there or just snack your way through the park eating fries, corn dogs, pretzels, more fries, ice cream, snow cones, spun sugar and finally more fries.  (Don’t you go to Kennywood for the fries?)  Tickets will go on sale July 5 at various locations throughout Verona and Oakmont including Giant Eagle, Verona News.  Tickets are $26 each.    Seniors 55 years and older my purchase their tickets for $16.  There are penalties if not used on Picnic Day.  Free transportation will be provided with the purchase of V/O Community Day Picnic ticket.  All those purchasing tickets from another source will be charged $3.  This year buses will leave Verona at 10:15 am and line up on East Railroad Avenue and Oakmont at 11:30 am from the High School parking lot on Third and Hulton avenues.  The return trip will leave Kennywood at 9 pm only.

 

And finally a reminder that Verona’s Farmers’ Market is every Thursday on the Verona Railroad Park green from 2 to 6 pm.  There are fresh, fresh vegetables, breads, cookies, hot foods, and lots of things that accompany fresh and delicious.
