Alter's Mansion For Sale: $30 Million

Got $30 million to drop on a new abode?

You're in luck: local business mogul Dennis Alter is selling his Whitemarsh estate, named "Arbor Hill," and asking for just that amount.

And you'd be getting quite a deal. The Philadelphia Business Journal estimates that the 70-acre estate cost between $50 and $80 million to build in 1999. The 40,000 square foot stone house was designed by Rafael Vinoly, of Kimmel Center fame, and was decorated by Sils Huniford Associates, a well-known interior design firm.

The home itself has 10 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, and has a "fortress built around a main courtyard that has a tower separating wings," the PBJ reports. In addition, the living room doubles as a full-scale basketball court, and a second 20,000 square foot structure contains an indoor tennis court, weight room, and caretaker's apartment.

According to the BizJournal, Alter began buying up properties in the late 1990's to assemble the estate. Located at 7111 Sheaff Lane, Fort Washington, the home is tucked between a farm, state park, and the Highlands mansion. 

Alter, a Philadelphia native and Temple graduate, has apparently fallen on harder times of late. His company Advanta, a financial firm, took a series of hits over the past two decades before declaring bankruptcy following the 2007 crisis, Philadelphia magazine reports.
