Come Play With Me is based on research about the connections in the brain that need to be made at this very early age. This series of 5 workshops emphasizes and supports learning through play; the role of the parent as a child’s first teacher; facilitates early intervention; and teaches strategies that promote healthy child development and literacy. We offer these workshops periodically as a part of our role as a Family Place Library.
Family Place Libraries™ is a nationwide network of hundreds of libraries that embrace the fact that literacy begins at birth and that libraries can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families. A proven change agent, Family Place libraries transform into community centers for early literacy and learning, caregiver education and engagement, family support, and community connectivity, helping to ensure all children enter school ready and able to learn.
During our Family Place workshops, which we call Come Play With Me, children ages 1- through 3-years and their parents/caregivers play together, meet other parents and caregivers, become familiar with the librarian and library resources, and meet local health and human service professionals. It’s an opportunity to learn more about and bond with children in an informal, interactive setting. The Community Room will be set up with toys and activities including blocks, puzzles, gross motor toys, books, manipulatives, transportation toys, dramatic play, music, and an art or exploration activity. Local family service professionals will be available at several workshops, along with a variety of books and other resources.
Registration is required. Please consider opting in to receive a text reminder about Come Play With Me! You will receive ONE text reminder, and your number will not be given to or used by anyone else for any other purpose at any time.

Crazy 8s is recreational, social, and designed to show kids in grades 1-2 that math is all around them. It offers unique, high-energy math activities that appeal to kids of all math abilities. It is not a tutoring program, but it gets kids ready and excited to learn in the classroom.
Let’s face it, most kids don’t like to practice their math facts. Kids will toss a numbered beach ball at each other and hardly notice they are practicing math. Like sneaking broccoli into the hot fudge sundae, just without the broccoli (or the ice cream).
Why are kids happier if they know their math facts cold? Because as they learn more advanced skills, they can focus on the cool problems they can solve, instead of stopping to wonder what 5 + 6 is. Math never needs to be a grind. Give kids their math wings!
Registration is required each month.

Registered therapy dogs and their volunteer owners visit the Library to spend time one-on-one with participants. Space is limited and registration is required!
School-age children can practice reading with one of the dogs, if they wish. Why read to dogs? Most children have a natural affinity for and bond with dogs, and because dogs are non-judgmental, children are less self-conscious while reading aloud to them. Children can improve their reading skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, while enhancing self-esteem, motivating speech, and building confidence. Reading to a therapy dog can decrease stress and anxiety in general, and specifically while reading aloud in front of other human listeners! If children associate reading with struggle, worry, or embarrassment, this is a chance to create new and pleasant associations with reading instead!
For anyone of any age who wants to spend time with a dog without reading, that’s fine too! Time spent with the dog can simply be to get comfortable and less fearful around a dog in a safe environment, or to just to ease the stress of life by petting a loving companion.
Registration will be available on this page beginning one week in advance.
