“One reason I participated in the Spread the Word 5K Run/1 Mile Walk for Best Buddies was to spread awareness, because many people do not understand what it is like to be a disabled person like me,” said PWHS Sophomore Stephen Wolford.

Best Buddies is a high school club that pairs regular education students with other students who have developmental and/or intellectual disabilities with the goal of fostering lifelong friendships. Club members play games and engage in other fun activities with their buddies several times throughout each month. In March, the club carried out the Rock Your Socks campaign to mark World Down Syndrome Day.

Continuing with the theme of raising awareness about inclusion, club members and others in the school agreed to walk or run and then share pictures to spread the word about the importance of inclusive practices. Fourteen students took part in the event, which began the weekend of March 20 and continued through April 4.

“My favorite thing about the walk was being able to socialize with my buddy and other club members [from a distance] when there wasn't a computer screen in between us,” said PWHS Senior Alexa DeLucca. “Best Buddies is the most amazing group of people, and this walk was able to show the whole school just how much change our club is capable of doing.”
