Mrs. Herbas' and Mrs. Moyer's classes at Colonial Elementary School (CES) made sure that spreading kindness wasn't something limited to January's "Great Kindness Challenge."

The fifth graders continued to perform individual Kind Acts in the community throughout February, and they started March with a drive to collect pajamas, socks, and underwear for Cradles to Crayons.

"A little thing for you can mean a lot for someone else," said CES Fifth Grader Grant Jennings.

The children's Kind Acts took many different forms:

  • Tyler Shoemaker delivered donuts to the local firehouse to thank them for their service.

  • Margorie Brenner wrote a note of thanks to her mail carrier for delivering her family's mail.

  • Several students emailed Principal Rose Rock, past teachers, and even current teachers notes of thanks and gratitude.

  • Collecting for Cradles to Crayons

After Mrs. Herbas mentioned that the local non-profit organization Cradles to Crayons was in desperate need of children's pajamas, socks, and underwear, the students were excited to start a collection.

"When I heard that kids needed stuff in our community, I felt that I should help them out," said CES Fifth Grader Hannah Craig.

"Knowing that a bunch of kids are getting stuff that they need was my favorite part," added classmate Danny Carrington.

The students created flyers and videos to promote the clothing drive to the other classes in their cluster and decorated donation boxes for the hallway outside their classrooms.

"My favorite part of the project was sorting the items and seeing all the different clothes that people donated to help families in need," said CES fifth grader Olivia Gaumer.

During their two-week donation drive, the fifth graders collected 76 pairs of socks, 104 packages of underwear, and 28 pairs of pajamas.

"Helping out with Cradles to Crayons made me feel happy, because I wasn't doing it by myself. I did it with my class, and that's one of the best things," said Gabi Drossner. "I hope that kids and adults get the love we gave them."

The two classes are currently planning what some of their next Kind Acts will be.

"We were beaming with pride to see our students so passionate and genuinely caring about others by continuing our Kind Acts," said CES Teachers Manuela Herbas and Alisa Moyer. "This project really promotes thinking about others and realizing how fortunate we all are."
