Colonial School District: Suchsland And Szperka Named U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Candidates

The United States Department of Education has announced that Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS) students Dean Suchsland and Alexander Szperka have been named as two of the more than 4,500 candidates in the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

The two PWHS seniors were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2021.

"On behalf of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, I would like to congratulate and honor Dean and Alex on being selected as candidates in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Their dedication has paid dividends by being named among the nation's best and brightest high school seniors," said PWHS Principal Dr. Jason Bacani. "They both have taken advantage of our strong academic and extracurricular programs that make them valued ambassadors for PWHS and notable role models for students across the country."

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation's most distinguished graduating seniors. Through an essay and application process, 161 finalists are chosen from the initial pool of candidates and traditionally travel to Washington, DC for the National Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presentation of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.
