Colonial School District's Facilities Staff Tackles Snow Removal

Our goal is to always have our campuses ready for a normal opening the next scheduled school day.

December 21,2020

While Colonial families were hunkered down at home for last week’s snowfall and Snow Day, members of Colonial’s Turf Department were onsite for nearly 24 hours — from the start of the storm at noon on Wednesday to 11 a.m. on Thursday — making sure that Colonial properties were safe and accessible.

“We plow and salt, but we also track the weather throughout the storm and communicate with local municipalities on their plowing, salting and assessment of the roads,” said Director of Facilities Joe Lally. “When the storm is over, we continue to remove snow from areas where it was placed during the plowing process. Our goal is to always have our campuses ready for a normal opening the next scheduled school day.”

Building custodial staff also played a large role by clearing, salting and maintaining sidewalks, entryways and emergency exits around their buildings.

“The storm itself is usually the biggest challenge — not necessarily the amount of snow but the type of snow,” added Mr. Lally. “A wet sleet/rain mixture along with drifting snow and areas that will freeze again overnight, like this recent storm, is very challenging. But the staff accepts these challenges with a great attitude and takes pride in serving our District and community.”

Thank you to Gene Kelly and the Turf Department, as well as the entire Custodial Staff led by Building Supervisors Rich Walton (Plymouth Whitemarsh High School), Glenn Reger (Colonial Middle School), Mary Pat Moyer (Colonial Elementary School), Mike Dougherty (Whitemarsh Elementary School), Helen Knox (Ridge Park Elementary School), Frank Testa (Plymouth Elementary School) and Ed Hojnacki (Conshohocken Elementary School)!
