Local Specials for ‘The Big Game’

A look at some of the best area haunts to hole up at on Super Bowl Sunday.

The NFL is a fanatically territorially organization.

As Slate business writer Matthew Yglesias spelled out earlier this week, the league’s position is that since it owns a trademark on the phrase "Super Bowl" it is illegal for anyone but their official sponsors to use the moniker to advertise, for instance, a "Super Bowl Special." The NFL even, to block creative marketers’ efforts to associate their brand with the game, tried, unsuccessfully, in 2006 to trademark the phrase "The Big Game."

So while there’s some ambiguity over what a local bar can and can’t call their Super Bowl specials, one thing is abundantly clear: there are some great places in Plymouth and Whitemarsh to grab a stool this Sunday and watch Tom Brady and Eli Manning trade touchdowns and Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick trade scowls.

Below are a few of the best, and a quick look at what they’re bringing to the table.

  • will have domestic draft specials and, they promise, even more. Follow them on Facebook for updates as kickoff draws nearer.
  • will have $2.25 drafts, domestic and otherwise, as well as a host of food specials.
  • will offer $1 domestic drafts during the game.
  • will go with their happy hour prices on Sunday: 50 percent off beer and appetizers and 50 cents off liquor.
  • will have $3 Budweiser and Bud Light bottles, $1 pretzel bites, and 50 cent wings.
  • will have an all-you-can eat and drink buffet that they’ve yet to price. “We’re thinking $25,” said an employee.
  • will have 50 cent wings, $3 Coors Light drafts, and $3.25 Blue Moons.
