POLL: Should Plymouth-Whitemarsh Schools Start Before Or After Labor Day?

Labor Day is a little late this year, and as a result, some schools in the area are starting before the holiday, while others are waiting until after the long weekend to hold the first classes.

Colonial School District and North Penn School classes began on Tuesday. At Great Valley and Phoenixville, school started on Monday.

But in other districts, like Norristown and Hatboro-Horsham, the first day of school is next week, on Sept. 8.

Labor Day, always held on the first Monday of September, was started to honor the American worker, and its date was picked for convenience because it was halfway between July 4 and Thanksgiving, according to the The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Last year, it fell on Sept. 1 and next year, it will fall on Sept. 5.
