On social media, the announcements about the flag-raising ceremonies drew both support and opposition.

"Thanks for being an inclusive community Conshy!," Colleen Dych wrote on the borough's Facebook page. "Proud to live here."

Another commenter on the Conshohocken thread questioned the decision to recognize the LBGTQ+ community around Memorial Day, saying the time period should be reserved for recognizing those who died in military service to the country.

Still, most of the comments seemed overwhelmingly positive and in support of the flag-raising ceremony.

In Royersford, the flag-raising announcement didn't seem to draw too many comments on social media.

The upcoming event, listed on Facebook, seemed to draw around 7 confirmations and 20 people who said they were interested in attending.

LGBTQ Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, New York City, which is known as a tipping point for the gay and lesbian movement in the United States, according to information provided by the United States Library of Congress.

The Stonewall Uprising, which took place in June, was six days of protest between police and members of the gay and lesbian community.

Today, various events are held across the globe in June to celebrate Pride Month, which is considered an opportunity to peacefully protest, raise political awareness of current issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, and celebrate pride.

"Pride Month is so important because it marks the start of huge change within the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the wider societal implications," reads the website AwarenessDays. "Although attitudes and injustice still remain, we have come a long way since the riots of 1969 and by continuing in this long standing tradition we continue to raise awareness, improve the attitudes of society and encourage inclusiveness."
