If you are an employee, one warning sign of fraud is receiving any type of correspondence that you filed an unemployment claim when you did not file for benefits. If you are an employer, one warning sign is receiving notice that a claim has been filed for one or more of your employees who are still working. 

The state Department of Labor & Industry attempts to identify and block unemployment compensation scams. The Department recommends the following steps to protect against scams.

·       Do not give out personal information over email or text message

·       Do not wire money

·       Ignore communications related to Unemployment Compensation benefits from someone asking for money; someone who says they can help you file for your benefits for a fee and anyone claiming to work for Labor & Industry who says they need a fee to complete your application

·       Never give out personal information on websites or social media channels

·       Do not respond to unsolicited emails or text messages
