Whitemarsh Elementary School Competes For New Recycled Playground

WHITEMARSH, PA — Whitemarsh Elementary School is competing to win a playground made completely from recycled oral care products.

The fourth annual Recycled Playground Challenge, sponsored by TerraCycle, Colgate, and ShopRite, ranks schools based on each shipment of recycled materials they send to TerraCycle for recycling, according to organizers.

Shipments contain disposed oral care products like empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, and floss containers.

One "credit" is awarded for every shipment, which is defined as as 0.02 pounds of used products. Credit is also given for votes made online here.

Schools from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, and Maryland are participating in the event. It's open to any family, school, individual, or community group.

The winner will have playground, with an approximate value of $50,000, installed on their property.

Whitemarsh currently sits in 10th place overall, with 1015 credits. The leader, St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School in Holland, Pennsylvania, is off to an early lead with 41,770 credits.
