NORTH COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, PA — A black bear was spotted in North Coventry Township Tuesday morning, as the season of unusually frequent spottings of the native animal continues.
The bear was seen in the area of Scholl Road, a residential area, moving around a local backyard.
Police responded to the scene but the bear left before they arrived.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has been notified and is working with local authorities to monitor the bear and safely relocate him if necessary.
Black bears are native to Pennsylvania and their appearance should not warrant any concern, though their numbers are lower in the densely populated southeastern region.
Issues can arise if the bear becomes reliant upon humans, specifically human trash, as a food source.
Residents are asked to be mindful about leaving pet food outdoors and leaving their trash unsecured.
If you see the bear, contact the North Coventry Police Department at (610) 323-8360.
