Baby Steelers And Hydier Take Phantoms To Nine Innings

Check out our coverage of the Twin County League American Junior Legion playoffs.

The scoop - In an epic pitchers' duel, Phoenixville starter Dave Palmen and Steelers right hander Jason Hydier battled through nine grueling innings before the Phantoms finally broke through on the board and scored their lone run.

Bryan Furr raced home with the winning tally on a double off the bat of Mike Anthony with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.

At one point, Pottstown stranded 10 men on base and had the winning run in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to push them across the plate.

Other key performers - Short stop Jimmy Mullin, Bailey Brown and T.J. Mullen continued to put pressure on Phoenixville as the trio combined for three hits, three walks drawn and two stolen bases.

Pottstown right fielder Josh Lafferty extended the game to extra innings as he gunned down a would-be go ahead run in the top of the seventh as catcher Curt Cherneskie kept the gamed deadlocked at zero.

Inside the lines - “We needed to take advantage of our chances,” said Hydier, who appeared frustrated. “We tried our best but just could not get that hit when we needed it."

"I felt great today,” added Hydier, a Pottstown High junior. “My fastball was working pretty well and I was able to hit my spots and Curt did a great job behind the plate keeping the ball in front of him.”

Say what? - “Wow what a game,” said Phoenixville manager A.J. Gray. “We got excellent pitching and played a very strong defensive game. A win against a good team like this will always help your confidence going forward, but we have to focus on playing our game.”

Next on the schedule - Pottstown will travel to Norchester at 6 p.m. Monday to face the Big Dawgz, who fell in extra innings 10-9 to Spring City in an elimination game.

Extra Innings - The Baby Steelers defense completed two double plays in the contest with no errors recorded by either team in a game that took two hour and 26 minutes to play in, at times, sweltering heat oat Sundstrom Field.
