Boyertown Celebrates Dog Days of August

It is often said that  every dog has his day, and that day is Saturday, Aug. 17, when Boyertown will officially go to the dogs,  as Building A Better Boyertown (BBB) hosts the 5th Annual Dog Days of August.

This year’s Dog Days will feature expanded activities from 10:00 – 1:00 p.m., beginning at the intersection of N. Chestnut St. and Philadelphia Avenue, where visitors can stop at the BBB table and get a map of the day’s events and their locations.

“The purpose of Dog Days is to bring community members and their pets to the downtown area of Boyertown to have fun and to visit stores in order to become familiar with what is available here,” explains Michele Barrett, Assistant Manager of Building a Better Boyertown.

Dogs and their human friends are invited to cool off at the Boyertown Area YMCA’s “Splash Party,” located behind Joe Paws Dog Bakery, in the “inner core” parking lot. At this location they can also meet the Phoenix Animal Rescue team (PAR), a non-profit group from Chester Springs, that rescues many animals from a high kill shelter in Philadelphia.

Visitors can also get free pet nail trims by Fuzzy Days Pet Grooming Salon and purchase gifts for their pets from Zimmers Pets and My Dog & Me, which will be selling reflective leashes.

At Studio B art gallery, animal lovers can take in the new show, “Nature Inc.,” as they come through the gallery area to the classroom where they can enjoy canine art created by photographer and illustrator Sharon Merkel and by mixed media painter Lynn Millar. Dogs are invited to grab a treat and some water while enjoying the show.

Boyertown Area Responsible Canine Owners (BARCO), a grassroots local volunteer group, will host an “indoor play area,” while additional venders, including Dog Town and the United Way of Boyertown, will be set up near Rita’s Water Ice.

Pet services such as GiGi’s Home Pet Care and Paw Stars Dog Training will be on site as well, giving dog owners an opportunity to meet the owners of these local businesses. A variety of downtown businesses and groups such as Serenity Junction, CrossFit Fidelity, BARCO, and others will open their doors to dog-friendly shoppers and provide watering stations for pets.

Of course no day is complete without food and Dog Days is no exception. Dogs can enjoy delicious treats at Joe Paws and then wash them down with a free PUP-sicle from Rita’s Water Ice, where a variety of delicious cold sweet treats will be available for human companions to purchase. In addition, Boy Scout Troop 533 will sell hot dogs and soft pretzels will be available at the BBB table.

Proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks,  the 2013 edition of Dog Days of August will end in style with The Three Dog Night After Party. The Other Farm Brewing Company will welcome dogs and their owners to the front porch and beer garden to enjoy several specialty brews commissioned for this event. These brews, named after several dog breeds, will be available from 1:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. Other Farm will also offer Hillbilly BBQ and entertainment, as well as special pricing. When the event wraps up, everyone is sure to be happy and dog-tired!

Commenting on the planning for the Dog Days of August, Barrett notes, “I am extremely excited about it.  A committee of people led by Sam Zimmers of Zimmers Pets and GiGi Malinchak of GiGi’s At Home Pet Care has been working hard on planning a great day. This is my first event working with BBB,” she adds.
