Brumfield Wins Gold at States, Trojans 4 x 100 Claims State Medal

SHIPPENSBURG -- The Indianapolis 500 is a well known American tradition and seen every year on Memorial Day weekend, another is the annual trek made by the finest track and field performers that the Keystone state has to offer, as they converge on the tiny college town of Shippensburg in search of something that is not available in the Wal Mart that welcomes visitors to town as they trickle off the interstate.

 What they are all in search of is a PIAA State championship gold medal.

Thousands of track fans and hundreds of athletes make their way over the turnpike and crossroads for the opportunity to etch their names into the rich history of the championships.

One such traveler is Owen J. Roberts senior Ryan Brumfield, who spent the fall dodging would-be tacklers and leaping over defensive backs.

For four consecutive years, Brumfield left Ship with his dream unfulfilled, until Saturday.

Brumfield, who finished second last year, cleared 6-10.00 to claim his first State gold medal in high jump, but was un able to set a new PR by clearing seven feet.

“Wow, when that pole gets that high it’s a little scary," said Brumfield. “It’s not that as if that two inches makes that big of a difference, it juts gets into your head that you are trying seven feet. I am so happy right now to finally win first after getting second last year.” 

It’s a good thing Brumfield didn’t have to board flight to return to Bucktown, as he may have needed extra time to check all of his jewelry as he completed the hat trick, scoring a seventh place medal in Triple jump on Friday and claiming a fourth place medal in long jump as well.

“Ryan is my boy,” said Pottstown High School’s Mishon Coppock. “It’s cool having some one to hang out with out here, we all encourage each other. I know I thrive off of the energy of my friends and the fans when they start clapping. To leave here with a medal when guys are trying seven foot jumps is great.”

 Under the pressure cooker that the state championship meet is, Coppock, who qualified with a height of 6-03.00, seeding him 14^th, was not expected to medal and needed to utilize his third jump to clear both 6-04.00 and 6-05.00 as he secured his spot on the podium.

Trojans’ triple jumper Corey Baker finished 29^th, jumping more than four feet shorter than the mark of 44-08.00 he used to qualify for states with a length of 40-03.25

Pottstown’s boy’s 4 x 100 meter relay team of Alex Maldanado, Coppock, Dewan Matthews and Baker qualified for Saturday’s championship final with a time of 42.28 and had to fight off a late surge before claiming the eighth place medal in a final that featured six teams from District One, with five of those squads scoring a medal.

“We wanted to break 42 seconds this year,” said Baker. “We ran good, but we need to have quicker starts without false starting like a few teams did. It was tough, the guy on the gun was a little slow between his set and go, but getting medal at states is a great thing.”

Thanks to the ever changing weather on Friday, Trojans sprinter Quiana MacIntosh was forced to fight off a cross wind during the prelims and failed to qualify for the final on Saturday, but the sophomore gained valuable experience in her first trip to states, where she qualified for with a time of 57.21, seeding her 15^th in the state.

“This has been a dream year,” said Brumfield. “Winning a gold medal here and a Pac10 championship in football, it’s a pretty good way to go out in my senior year. I don’t think I will trying to clear seven feet anytime soon, I am happy with 6-10.”
