Colorado Movie Theater Mass Shooter Moved To Pennsylvania Prison: Reports

Convicted movie theater mass shooter James Holmes has been transferred to a Pennsylvania penitentiary, reports say.

ALLENWOOD, PA — Convicted movie theater mass shooter James Holmes has been transferred from a Colorado prison to a federal penitentiary in Allenwood, according to multiple reports.

Holmes was sentenced to life in prison for killing 12 people in a shooting rampage at an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater in 2012. According to multiple reports, Holmes' location was not publicly known for two years, angering survivors of the attack. More than 70 people were injured in the shooting.

This week, however, Federal Bureau of Prisons records obtained by the Washington Post revealed that Holmes has been transferred to a high-security facility in Allenwood, approximately 165 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Despite pressure from the local media and victims, the Department of Corrections withheld his location, citing the Interstate Compact Agreement. That agreement allows states to trade prisoners due to safety concerns, 11 News in Colorado Springs reported.

For several years, Colorado media pressed for an answer to the question of Holmes' location. 11 News of Colorado Springs said it submitted open records requests to all 50 states and Washington, D.C., to inquire if he was a prisoner in their systems.

"The Colorado Department of Corrections confirms that inmate James Holmes has been transferred to a federal prison," the department said in a statement. "The State sought to place the inmate in the Federal System several months ago, but placement required finding space at a facility that could provide appropriate security. That space recently became available and the move to the Federal prison was secured."
