Falcons and Wildcats look for state playoff berths

PIAA District One playoff action

As the Pioneer Athletic Conference softball regular season concluded, there was no hotter team than Pottsgrove, as the Falcons utilized the momentum from a doubleheader sweep of Perkiomen Valley to propel them into winning nine of their last 10 games.

Pottsgrove (11-7 league, 14-8 overall) has gotten sensational mound work all year by Marisa Kineer, including a no-hitter, as the right-handed sensation has been a strike out machine, fanning double-digit batters on six occasions.

Offensively, the Falcons have been improved on the early season run production owes, by running more and getting clutch hits from Jess Kurtz, Maddi O’Brien and catalyst junior left fielder Taylor Robinson.

It has been the Pottsgrove defense that has gotten them to where they are as shortstop Amber Hansley, who has committed only two errors all season, and second baseperson Emily Miller present a middle infield that does not give the opposition extra outs.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Falcons will travel to Norristown High School to battle class AAA fourth seeded Radnor in the PIAA District One playoffs.

The winner will advance to the district championship game and get an invite to the PIAA State tournament next week.

In the PIAA District One baseball playoffs, Owen J. Roberts High School will be competing in the class AAAA bracket as the Wildcats, who dropped their last game to Council Rock North 4-3, will be squaring off against Pac10 foe Methacton in the play back round of the tournament for the right to play for fifth place in the district and garner a state tournament bid.

The Wildcats split the season series with the Warriors and have gotten to this point with a 12-2 win over Penncrest, followed by 8-2 victory over Henderson before dropping into what is essentially the losers bracket following their loss to CR North.

Dave Reifsnyder, Tim Ponto and Rob Patete will look to get back on track offensively as the trio has provided an invaluable contribution all season in leading OJR to a 14-6 Pac10 record including post season, 16-7 overall record.

OJR will be the home squad, in the 4 p.m. Tuesday tilt, being the higher seed.

The Lady Wildcats, who started the season by winning 15 games in a row and finished with a 16-2 regular season record before dropping a shocker to Boyertown in the first round of the Pac10 final four, will be in action as well on Tuesday.

OJR (17-4 overall) will face North Penn in a play back game, as the Wildcats -- who earned a first round bye in the PIAA District One playoffs -- beat Downingtown East 2-1 before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Neshaminy High School.

Taylor Shultz has gotten back into mid season form on the mound and OJR has a distinct advantage playing at home with Lexie Voszily stepping into the batter box with her 17 career home runs to compliment the hot bats of Taylor Kelly, Megan Moore and Sarah Dowd.

First pitch will be at 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to the fifth place game with a berth in the PIAA state tournament at stake.
