Falcons Host Home Run Derby
The event raised money for the team to buy items including equipment.
With the Phillies out of the playoffs, Pottstown residents needed another outlet for one last tribute to The Boys of Summer. Luckily, the Pottsgrove High School baseball team home run derby fundraiser fit the bill.
"It's our first year doing it," Falcons baseball head coach Rich Ashburn said. "We needed to raise some funds for getting better equipment and things like that. The school only pays for so much, so we're just trying to raise some money for Pottsgrove High School baseball.
Asburn hopes to hold the event annually. "This year, we did it in the fall because we just didn't have any option … we're going to try and do it in the spring every year."
Batters could get 10 outs for $10, or 30 for $25.
"On every 10 outs, we have a scoring system," Ashburn said. "It's 2 points for a ground ball, 4 points for a ball that lands in the second area (the outfield), 6 points for the further area (roughly the warning track) and over the fence is 10 points. And then we have a money ball for the 10 pitch, which doubles everything."
Raffle baskets and food were also on hand.
Asburn hopes the fundraiser will be a continued success, and provide a different experience than the dinners and raffles commonly used.
"This is a little bit more involved and fun," Ashburn said.
