Former Pottstown HS Valedictorian, 88, Passes Away
A Pottstown man, 88, very active in the local community and his high school's valedictorian, has passed away.

POTTSTOWN, PA — J. Edward Wood, Jr. age 88, husband of Louise W. (Weiss) Wood, of Pottstown, PA, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2017 in the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. Born on July 19, 1929 in Limerick, PA, he was a son of the late J. Edward Sr. and Mary (Miller) Wood.
Mr. Wood was Valedictorian of Pottstown High School, class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Army 66th Topo Engineers Company, and always enjoyed attending their reunions. He worked at Bethlehem Steel prior to opening his own engineering firm, Pottstown C.D.E. He was a member of Coventry Church of the Brethren. Mr. Wood sang in the quartet Downtown Sound, as well as the Ches-Mont Jubilaires Barbershop Chorus. He served as the Past Grand Master of the Union Lodge #479 FandAM in Birdsboro, as well as Cub and Boy Scout Leader of Troop 127. When he joined any organization, Mr. Wood was fully invested in their betterment, and would always give his all. He also enjoyed and was an avid gardener.

Mr. Wood is survived by two sons, Joseph E. III, husband of Linda Wood of Milton, DE and Douglas E., husband of Patricia Wood of New Ringgold, PA; one sister, Joan, wife of Richard Freed of Red Hill, PA; four grandchildren, Greg, husband of Michelle Fritz of Pottstown, PA, Jennifer Wood, companion of Christopher of Birdsboro, PA, Tim, husband of Lindsey Haines of Reading, PA, and Tom Haines of Reading, PA; and six great-grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, Jenna, Alex, Brooklynn, and Deklan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral ceremony at Coventry Church of the Brethren, South Keim Street and East Cedarville Road, Pottstown, PA 19465 on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 11:00 am. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Major and Rev. Mark Muthler. Burial will be held in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Pottstown, PA. Friends will be received from 9:30 am - 10:45 am Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities, 57 N. Franklin Street, Pottstown, PA 19464 or to the Coventry Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund, 946 Keen Road, Pottstown, PA 19465. Condolences may be made by visiting www.RoyersfordFuneralHome.com.
