Montco Scam Callers Now Threatening To Shut Off Your Electricity

Officials warn that the scammers can be "very convincing."

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Authorities are warning about a new scam in Montgomery County that involves threatening to shut off electricity.

Fake PECO scammers are calling residents and demanding they send cash or a prepaid credit card to an address to avoid losing power.

PECO will never ask residents to send cash, they remind residents.

Officials warn that the scammers can be "very convincing."

"The call can seem very convincing if you hear a PECO greeting and realistic agent answering this call, but don’t be fooled. PECO representatives will never call you to request a bill payment in cash or a prepaid credit card," officials said.

If you do answer your phone, do not give out any personal information. Report scams to the police or by calling PECO at 1-800-494-4000.
