New Exhibit Debuts at MCCC

Montgomery County Community College on Wednesday held an opening reception for a new art exhibition at the North Hall Gallery.

“Acquisition of Ideas” features the work of retired teachers and local artists Robyn Burckhardt and Liza Fleming.

Burkhardt taught art at Spring Ford High School and Fleming taught art at Boyertown Junior High East. They retired four years ago and now have more time to dedicate to their artwork, they said.

“I didn’t really have a chance to be serious about my painting,” said Fleming.

Burkhardt said she began as a fiber artist and later added paper making, metal smithing and painting to her work.

“The show contains samples of all of the media we work in,” said Burkhardt.

The exhibit features Burkhardt’s paintings and several mixed media projects, and paintings by Fleming.

“I think it’s more about the process and journey and letting the pieces evolve,” said Fleming.

The show has been in the gallery since May 16 but other local openings delayed the official debut of “Acquisition of Ideas” until now.

“I love the dynamics of Liza’s work and I feel Robyn’s work compliments her work,” said gallery director Holly Cairns. “They really compliment each other very well.”

The North Hall Gallery opened six years ago and features work from local and student artists.

“It’s our mission to bring art to the community and the students,” said Alana Mauger, the school’s director of communications.

“Acquisition of Ideas” will remain in the North Hall Gallery until July 29.
