Owen J. Roberts Teacher Sexually Assaulted Student In March: DA

The teacher took the 17-year-old girl into his classroom when she came back during quarantine to collect her things, the DA said.

SOUTH COVENTRY, PA — A teacher at Owen J. Roberts has been charged after authorities said he sexually assaulted one of his students in March.

Stephen Eric Raught, 53, faces numerous charges in connection with the incident, the Chester County District Attorney's Office announced last week.

Raught and the victim, a 17-year-old girl, would frequently spend time after school, sometimes discussing personal matters, and he would often hug her, authorities said.

On March 16, amid quarantine, the victim went to school with permission to retrieve some of her belongings, police said.

Surveillance footage showed the two together, and teen said that Raught took her into his classroom, and hugged and kissed her on the lips, according to the DA.

They then moved to a part of the room that couldn't be seen from the doorway and and "further sexual conduct" continued, the DA said.

“I really wish I could take you home with me," the victim told police that Raught said. "But we both know that would be very bad and I wouldn’t be able to help myself...Too bad we have quarantine, or else you’d be in my classroom every day after school. But I’d be late to baseball practice every day and chances are someone would walk in and see something.”

Pennsylvania State Police in Embreeville received a tip on the case on March 24. Raught was taken into custody on May 7 following an investigation.

He was arraigned via video on May 7 and bail was set at $50,000 cash. He did not post bail, and was booked at Chester County Prison.
