Pottstown Hospital Announces Mass Layoffs Again

POTTSTOWN, PA — Pottstown Hospital will lose nearly a quarter of its staff due to layoffs, their owner Tower Health announced.

A total of 160 workers will lose their jobs, which accounts for about 22 percent of the entire hospital. It comes just months after another 131 employees at Pottstown were eliminated last fall.

In a statement announcing the move, Tower said that the cuts are part of a multimillion dollar investment to expand the emergency room, improve behavioral health services, and update other sections of the hospital.

When the additions are complete, 38 more positions are expected to be added back, Tower said.

"We recognize today’s announcement also includes difficult workforce decisions affecting valued members of our team,” Tower Health said in a statement. “These decisions were not made lightly and are not a reflection of the dedication, compassion or professionalism of the individuals affected. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting impacted employees throughout this transition."

The job cuts will go into effect on Sept. 28, according to the WARN notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor.

Tower had already faced increasing scrutiny for its previous cuts and questions from local officials over its investments in the Pottstown community.

Tower Health also owns Phoenixville Hospital, Reading Hospital, and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.
