Pottstown Park Closes Due To 'Contaminated Soil'

Pollock Park in Pottstown was shut down for "potential health hazards."

POTTSTOWN, PA — A Pottstown park has been shut down and closed to the public due to contamination of the soil, the borough announced.

Officials announced that Pollock Park was closed on Thursday.

The soil is being studied and funds needed for the required cleanup are being sought, according to the borough.

According to the Pottstown Mercury, heavy metals - lead and chromium - were found in the soil by contractors working on improvements for the park. The concentration of the metals in the soil exceeds the safety limit outlined by the EPA for playground soils.

Officials said there is no timeline for when the cleanup will be complete.

The park, located on Cross Street, is near several steel and manufacturing plants.
