Raven's Claw Golf League

The Raven's Claw Wednesday night men's league is one of the top leagues in Pennsylvania.

The Raven's Claw golf course, which opened in 2005, is known as one of the finer golf courses in Pennsylvania.

Golfweek magazine named it one of the top 10 public golf courses in the state for all six years that it has been opened.

One of the more popular aspects of Raven's Claw is its Wednesday night men's league.

"The league is open to any amateur golfers," said Tyson Marostica, the league's assistant golf professional. "We have guys as young as seventeen or eighteen and some guys in their sixties and seventies. We had one golfer a few years ago who was eighty-five years old."

Marostica said when the league was founded it had approximately 40 players. Today, it has 52 players.

"The number of players in our league has increased each year," Marostica said. "Word of mouth and our reputation as a solid golf course have helped us tremendously."

Golfer Mark Murphy is in his first year to compete in the Wednesday night men's league. He said he joined the league to dedicate one night a week to golf.

Murphy also said he loves the design of Raven's Claw.

"The design is great," Murphy said. "It's not extremely tough compared to a lot of other courses and the driving area is a real nice place to warm up and play some shots."

Fellow golfer Chuck Ogborn, who has been an on-again off-again member of the league for the last six years, agrees with Murphy.

"The design is very good. It's definitely one of the more interesting courses that I've been at and the difficulty is there, but it's not too challenging," he said. "They definitely keep the conditions of the course looking good also."

The league consists of a 16-week season, culminating in a postseason tournament. The postseason features the top eight golfers and prizes are awarded to the top two finishers. The scoring for the league allows each golfing pair to pick the best score of the two for each hole on the golf course.

The Raven's Claw men's league includes events such as the "closest to the pin," "pot of gold" competitions and the Montgomery County amateur golf championship, which will be held on August 6 - 7. An end of year banquet is also held for all of the league's golfers following the conclusion of the Wednesday night season.

Located at 3159 West Ridge Pike in Pottstown, the Raven's Claw course includes a grill, bar and number of benefits for members of the league.
