Route 422 To Shut Down Overnight For Construction

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – U.S. 422 West will be closed and detoured at the Route 100 Interchange on Tuesday, February 16, through Friday, February 19, from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the following morning for the placement of 10 concrete beams on the new bridge being built over the Schuylkill River in North Coventry Township and West Pottsgrove Township, PennDOT announced.

During the overnight operation, U.S. 422 west traffic will be detoured and directed onto Route 100 north.

Drivers will follow Route 100 north to westbound High Street, and take High Street west to return to U.S. 422 west. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the area, PennDOT said.

PennDOT’s contractor is currently replacing the westbound U.S. 422 bridge over the Schuylkill River between the Route 100 and Stowe interchanges, as part of the $36.2 million bridge improvement project.

One lane of eastbound and westbound traffic is traveling over the river on the U.S. 422 bridge that formerly carried eastbound drivers only.

The new U.S. 422 crossing is being built in three stages to keep one travel lane open in each direction during construction. The westbound U.S. 422 structure is being replaced in stage one, the eastbound U.S. 422 bridge will be rebuilt in stage two, and the center median in stage three. Construction is scheduled to finish in September 2018.

The new U.S. 422 crossing will be 924 feet long and 95 feet wide. The new structures will carry two 12-foot travel lanes, a 10-foot outside shoulder and an eight-foot inside shoulder. The existing U.S. 422 crossing is 869 feet long and 72 feet wide.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $36,237,872 contract that is financed with 100 percent state funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania’s transportation plan.

This improvement project is the second of six projects to move to construction for PennDOT’s multi-phase program to rebuild and improve seven miles of U.S. 422 between the Berks County line and the Sanatoga Interchange.
